Henry Schein Cares Foundation supports ADA's "Give Kids A Smile" NASCAR Oral Screening Event
October 2011 — Henry Schein Cares Foundation, Henry Schein, 3M ESPE, and American Dental Association Give Kids A Smile (GKAS) teamed up twice to organize special oral health events in association with NASCAR.
On March 12, 2011, approximately 7,000 children enjoyed the festivities at SpeedFest, an annual appreciation day for NASCAR fans held at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Volunteers from the surrounding area talked to parents, caregivers, and their children in a special tent about the importance of oral health and invited them to return to the Charlotte Speedway track on October 15, 2011 to receive an oral health screening. Children received a "SpeedFest kit," which included a card with oral health tips, a toothbrush, toothpaste, and Henry Schein dental floss.
On October 25, approximately 85 volunteer dentists and dental team members provided screenings, sealants, and fluoride varnish to nearly 200 children from the surrounding area through the Speedway Charities program. Children also received digital X-rays embedded in a wristband to promote a continuity of care with their dentist. In addition, approximately 2,000 children who were at the track received oral health packets including education materials. Every child that was seen received a list of all Charlotte area dentists who accept Medicaid. The cover letter attached to the list, moreover, urged parents/guardians to find their child a dental "home" no matter if they needed specific work or not, highlighting the need for regular visits. The festivities featured a visit from NASCAR driver Greg Biffle, a clown, a caricature artist, and a picnic lunch. Speedway Children's Charities, DEXIS, and the North Carolina Dental Association also participated in this event.
As part of this initiative, Greg Biffle created a 60-second public service announcement about Give Kids a Smile. Based on Biffle's participation with Give Kids a Smile, the National Motorsports Press Association selected him as the fourth quarter winner of the NMPA Speedway Motorsports Spirit Award. The award is designed to recognize character and achievement in the face of adversity, sportsmanship, and contributions to motorsports.
