The Henry Schein Cares Foundation presented a $500,000 check to American Cancer Society to support Hope Lodge
April 2010 — Stanley M. Bergman, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Henry Schein, cut the ribbon at the April 16, 2010 dedication ceremony for the new Henry Schein Welcome Center at the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge New York City, the Jerome L. Greene Family Center. He was joined by other Team Schein Members, supplier partners, customers and Hope Lodge personnel for a ceremony that included the presentation of a check for $500,000 from the Henry Schein Cares Foundation. In addition, there was an emotional testimonial by one guest, himself a cancer survivor, who is now a caregiver for his mother.
Hope Lodge is a free temporary housing service provided to those receiving treatment for cancer at local hospitals. During their stay at the Hope Lodge, cancer patients and their loved ones are given a comfortable and supportive place to stay during their treatment and are armed with vital information to help them make informed decisions about the disease. Dedicated to improving access to high-quality cancer care and to minimizing the financial and emotional stress of a cancer diagnosis, Hope Lodge provides access to counseling, comprehensive support programs, and nutrition and exercise classes for patients. Hope Lodge is their home away from home, offering 60 private guest rooms in a home-like environment. Each guest floor includes a community kitchen and dining area, a quiet lounge and laundry facilities. The main floor includes a communal kitchen, lounge area, meditation room, computer center and library.
Henry Schein Cares also partnered with the American Cancer Society to provide specially designed Welcome Kits for guests staying at Hope Lodge. Henry Schein worked with its supplier partners to provide the contents of the kits, which include a backpack, toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, stress relief ball, key chain, picture frame, personal journal and other items. The kits are intended to make the guests feel at ease and make their stay at the Hope Lodge more comfortable and less stressful.
